Advanced DAX Workshops in the upcoming months –#dax #tabular #powerpivot

The adoption of DAX is slowly growing and we can see that from comments to article, blog posts, web site traffic (including DAX Formatter usage). For this reason, the demand for more advanced training about DAX is also increasing. We had great feedback from our last white papers (Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution and SSAS Tabular as Analytical Engine) and we see that this reflect in a broader adoption. For this reason, also the demand for more advanced DAX content is growing, and we planned a number of courses in the next future.

I and Alberto Ferrari will travel a lot in the upcoming months to deliver many Advanced DAX workshops, but we still have some more introductive training coming soon.

This is the list of upcoming Advanced DAX Workshop (only in Europe by now, hopefully US coming next…):

We will have two pre-conferences at PASS Summit (3-4 November, 2014 – Seattle, WA):

If you want to learn SSAS Tabular starting from scratch, you have these other options to attend the SSAS Tabular Workshop:

  • Online (October 22-24, 2014) – optimized for US time zones
  • Zurich, Switzerland (November 17-19, 2014 – Alberto Ferrari)

We are also working on other content for the next months, and remember that we can deliver onsite training if your team is too large and/or too far from one of the public classroom sites. I look forward to see new things announced in the next weeks/months, and I am pretty sure DAX will grow its popularity (despite the lack of a good editor!).

Reminder: If You Want to Vote in the PASS Board of Directors Election, You Have 6 Days…

Per Thomas LaRock’s post titled Board of Directors Election Update on the PASS Blog : All PASS members who have not yet received a ballot and who had an existing profile as of June 1, 2014, will be given the opportunity to receive a ballot by updating their profiles before October 5, 2014, at midnight PDT . On October 6 , we will pull an updated list of registered voters, filter for duplicates, and then on October 7 , we will send all newly registered voters a ballot.  All voting will end on…(read more)

Simulate the SQL WHERE condition in DAX–#dax #powerpivot #ssas

I recently wrote a short article about filtering data in DAX. In the last month I’ve seen a growing number of people with a SQL background going to Tabular, without having a previous experience of MDX. In my opinion, learning DAX is easier if you try to match its features to SQL rather than to MDX. The reality is that DAX is somewhere in the middle, because join between tables can be implicit in a query (like in MDX), but you can create filters that resembles existing “virtual relationships” (like in SQL with explicit JOIN).

For this reason, I recently restarted writing articles of the series “From SQL to DAX”, and I already published

I am already working on other articles to enhance the series – feedback and suggestions for the future topics are welcome!

PASS SQL Saturday #356 Slovenia Pre-Conference Seminars

I am proud and glad I can announce two top pre-conference seminars at the PASS SQL Saturday #356 Slovenia conference. The speakers and the seminars titles are:

Both seminars will take place on Friday, December 12th, in the classrooms of our sponsor Kompas Xnet. The price for a seminar is € 149, with early bird price at € 119. Early bird price is valid until October 31st.

I am also using this opportunity to explain how and why we decided for these two seminars. The decision was made by the conference organizers, Matija Lah, Mladen Prajdič, and Dejan Sarka. There was a lot of discussion in different social networks about PASS Summit pre-conference seminars lately. If you have any objections for our seminars, please do not start big discussions in public; please tell them to the three of us directly.

First of all, unlike at the PASS Summit seminars, the speakers are not going to earn big money here, and therefore it is not really worth spending much time and energy on our decision. We think that any of the speakers who sent proposals for our SQL Saturday could present a top quality seminar. We would like to enable seminars for every speaker that wants to deliver one. However, in a small country, we will have already hard time to fill up the two seminar we have currently. Our intention is to reimburse at least part of the money the speakers spent on their own for travelling expenses and accommodation. In our opinion, it makes sense to do this for the speakers that spent the most for the travelling. Coming here from USA is expensive, and it also takes three days in both directions. That’s why we decided to organize the seminars for the first two speakers from USA.

Of course, this is not the last event. If everything goes well with SQL Saturday #356 and with the seminars, we will definitely try to organize more events in the future, and invite more speaker to deliver a seminar as well.

Thank you for understanding!
